A regular feature of the music program at Laar en Berg is the appreciation and study of music from non-Western cultures. To further this goal, all students in year 2 and those in years 4/5/6 Kunst Muziek will participate in a Gamelan workshop at school in the coming weeks.
Gamelan is the name for the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali. A gamelan orchestra consists mainly of percussion instruments such as drums, kulintangs, gongs and xylophones, but also flutes as well.
The gamelan is not only an integral part of Indonesian culture, but it is considered one of the most highly developed musical forms in the world. Despite this complexity one can still get to know Gamelan in a short (45 min) workshop. By combining simple patterns, various moods are generated that together tell a musical story. The characteristic and almost enchanting sounds quickly bring the participants into a decidedly "Eastern" atmosphere full of spirituality, focus, and silence.
The gamelan workshops will be conducted by maX Music, a music education organization in Amersfoort that works as a "cultuuraanbieder" for schools in the province of Noord-Holland. The workshops will take place in the music room at school on Thursday the 18th and Monday the 22nd of January.
