The bilingual stream of Laar & Berg

Laar & Berg offers secondary education in the bilingual stream where 50% of the subjects are taught in English. The benefit of this kind of learning lies in the fact that nearly all Universities in the Netherlands use English as their language of instruction. Having followed the bilingual stream at our school means that our students will have a significant advantage in their academic education afterwards. Good command of English as well as one´s own language enables clear expression of ideas, attitudes and feelings. The learning of other languages extends that competence and teaches appreciation of different cultures and ways of thinking.

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP)

The bilingual programme of our school is taught according to the IB MYP teaching philosophy. The educational aim of the International Baccalaureate Organisation is to awaken the interests of students and teach them to relate the content of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. By emphasizing the dynamic contribution of knowledge, skills, experience and critical thinking, the International Baccalaureate promotes academic achievement coupled with responsible citizenship supported by the community and service programme. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students between the ages of 12 and 16, years 1 to 4. After the four years of the MYP our students make a transition to the Dutch programme and take their Havo or Vwo exams. The advantage of the MYP approach is that it offers a teaching model that embraces yet transcends the focus on traditional school subjects. While insisting upon thorough study of the various disciplines, MYP accentuates the inter-relatedness of them and so develops a holistic view of knowledge. This interdisciplinary perspective asks the student to consider issues in their widest scope, and to realise that good solutions often draw upon insights one has acquired from many sources. With holistic education and inter-cultural awareness, the Middle Years Programme stresses the importance of communication.
